Children and Youth Services

We provide recreational program services that respond to the needs of preschool (0 to 5 years) and school aged children (6 to 12 years) and youth (13 to 18 years) in the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows area. In addition Youth Services oversees the operation of the Greg Moore Youth Centre, Pitt Meadows Youth Centre, and the Thomas Haney School Yard Action Park. Children and youth programming utilizes a benefit-based approach with a focus on active living and leadership development, supporting children and youth to contribute to their own health and well being. Youth Services works with community Partners to encourage the delivery of integrated; prevention focused programming that will meet the needs of children and youth in this community.

Neighbourhood Development

We support and encourage all efforts to build a community of healthy, connected neighbourhoods. Our goal is to help neighbourhoods build capacity through leadership development and efforts focused on bringing neighbours together. Support is provided to community initiatives such as creating a long-term community garden plan and securing an ongoing neighbourhood celebration grant program. Work in this area is coordinated with other departments to facilitate neighbourhood input to community planning and the design of community projects.

Building Community- One Neighbourhood at a Time

Connect with your neighbours throughout the year. Building relationships in your neighbourhood improves your sense of wellbeing, your sense of security and strengthens the quality of life for you and your neighbours. $100 Block Party Grants are available to individuals who wish to organize an activity in their neighbourhood which will help families, children and individuals get to know one another. Activities that some neighbourhoods have enjoyed include block parties, easter egg hunts, christmas caroling, movie nights, barbecues and picnics, and square dancing.

Social Planning

We provide support to the District of Maple Ridge Social Planning Advisory Committee which focuses on improving the social well-being of the community by building community capacity through Social Services Network Development, Community Solutions initiatives, Community Building Initiatives, and by encouraging Socially Sustainable practices for current and future citizens. By creating an opportunity for dialogue between Council and local service providers, agencies, and other levels of government, a collaborative approach to meeting the needs of the community is strengthened. Information is shared, needs or gaps in services are identified, and through collaboration, resources and action plans are developed.
